The Home Styling Tips that Won’t Date

New Year, new home? Or maybe your home could just use a bit of a refresh?

You’re tired of spending your time and money on ideas and items that are outdated within a few years?  If you’ve landed here, we’re guessing you’re looking for some original styling tips that won’t date.

Read on…

Styling the inside of your home might sound a bit daunting.  But believe us when we say you don’t have to be a qualified interior designer to turn your space into something “instaworthy”.  Whether you’re updating for your own enjoyment or preparing your home for sale, creating a home that’s every bit as functional as it is beautiful (without breaking the bank) is easier than it sounds.

Big family home or a small, inner-city apartment?  It doesn’t matter: every room and area in your home can become a place you’re proud of.  All it takes is some fresh inspiration and a bit of creativity.

As always, the team at Love & Co are one step ahead, and we’ve put together this list of timeless styling tips that will suit any client’s needs and budget.

Here’s the deal:

Our Top 5 Styling Tips that Won’t Date

  1. Neutral Paint Palette

We all know that a fresh coat of colour on walls and ceilings is one of the quickest ways to transform the look and feel of any room.  But getting that colour right is sometimes easier said than done.

Colour trends come and go, but neutral shades never go out of date.  Whites, creams, taupes and greys have been popular since forever, and the simple reason is that as well as making a space feel light, bright and airy, they offer a wonderfully blank canvas to build on.

  1. Choose Natural Fibres

Nothing is more timeless than nature itself.  And by including natural fibres and textures in your styling, you’ll bring in that warmth and organic beauty that only Mother Nature can create.

Rattan and woven furniture items are easy to come by and relatively inexpensive.  Hey, they’re nothing new, but that’s just the point: they’re timeless and chic, as well as super functional and practical.  Check out these cabinets, lounge chairs and side tables from Ikea and Kmart.

Jute, linen, leather and cotton… natural fibres are inherently comfortable and beautiful.  Whether it’s upholstery, cushions, throws, window treatments or floor rugs, natural fibres are always a stylish choice.

Natural sheepskin rugs have become a popular décor choice for many Melbournians – they can be layered with other floor mats, flung casually over an easy chair, rolled up along with other throws in a basket or used as a gorgeous table runner: they’re versatile, elegant and always in fashion.

  1. Indoor Plants

Who doesn’t love indoor plants?  Bringing a slice of green inside your home is a sure-fire way to freshen things up and create contrast and visual interest.

‘But what if I’m not a green-thumbs?’ I hear you ask – there’s no need to worry: there are plenty of hardy little green babies that will not only survive, but thrive with minimal attention.

  1. Oversized Art

There’s nothing like oversized art to make a serious statement.  For maximum impact, invest in a single piece that you love, then hang it in a prominent position such as above a key furniture piece or over the fireplace.

We get it: large, quality artworks often come with hefty price tags, so you might have to get a bit creative with your options.  Scout around your local second-hand shops for a bargain (remember, you can always repaint the frame or reframe a print).

If you’re an avid DIY-er, why not try your hand at creating something original yourself?  Here’s a few ideas to get you started…

  1. Express Yourself

When styling your home, don’t forget to include your own personal touch: this is your home and it must reflect you.

With so much inspiration online, in magazines and everywhere else we look, it’s easy to get so distracted by what everyone else loves and forget that there’s no ‘right’ or ‘wrongs’ when it comes to styling our homes.

As a precaution, we suggest that you stick with the ‘less is more’ principle: curated displays of a few quality items are generally more eye-catching and can tell a story as well as hundreds of little bits and bobs stacked up everywhere.
